How to Remove Google Pay Data from an Android Phone
Google Pay is now shown as Google Wallet on many Android phones, although Samsung Galaxy handsets common in Australia and older installations may still use the Google Pay name. The app label and settings path can therefore differ even when the removal task is the same.
Many Australians simply call it the mobile wallet, but a useful cleanup separates information held on the handset from information held in your Google Account. Clearing an app’s storage handles the first; it does not remove a bank card, delete a payments profile, or alter records kept by the card issuer.
Before changing anything, decide whether you want to reset one app, remove a card, close the payments profile, or prepare a phone for sale. Uninstalling Google Pay alone may leave the card linked, allowing it to reappear when you sign in on another device.
Deletion is most useful when you know which service holds each record. Thinking about data stewardship and access controls, rather than treating every reset as a complete erasure, is also the approach described in resources on responsible data practices.
Choose the cleanup that matches your goal
Start with the narrowest action that meets your need. A local reset suits an app that is malfunctioning, while a new handset or sold phone needs account removal and a full erase.
The available options differ in scope:
| Goal | What changes | Main action | What may remain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset an app issue | Local cache, settings and app session | Settings > Apps > Google Pay or Wallet > Storage > Clear storage | Online card, Wallet history and issuer records |
| Remove one card | Payment method and local token | Wallet > Settings > Payment methods > Remove | The card held by your bank |
| Close the payments profile | Wallet methods and profile history | Wallet website > Settings > Close payments profile | Receipts held by Google, retailers or other Google services |
| Prepare a used phone | Local apps, accounts and files | Sign out, clear storage, then erase and reset | Cloud account data and any linked cards |
If the aim is privacy rather than troubleshooting, close the payments profile after moving any card you still use to Google Play or another service. If the phone is faulty, avoid a factory reset until you have confirmed that Wallet data can be restored.
Clear Google Pay or Wallet data on Android
Open Settings, choose Apps or Apps & services, and select Google Pay or Google Wallet. Tap Storage, then Clear storage. On some Samsung Galaxy phones, the route may run through the Google account entry rather than the Apps list. If the app can be uninstalled, uninstall it after clearing its data; system-installed versions may offer only Uninstall updates.
Reopen the app and sign in only if you still want to use it. Clearing storage usually signs out the app and resets local preferences, cached images and saved payment tokens. It does not delete the underlying card or send a cancellation request to your bank.
For browser remnants, open Chrome, go to Privacy and security, and clear cached images and files. This is optional and affects many sites, so use a time-limited cache clean where available. It will not remove a payment method from your Google Account.
Remove cards and close the payments profile
To remove one card, open Google Wallet, tap your profile picture, and go to Settings, Payment methods, then the card and Remove. Older Google Pay menus put this under Wallet settings or Google Pay > Manage. Repeat the process for every card you want gone.
For a broader removal, open Google Wallet in a browser, open Settings, select your payments profile, and choose Close payments profile. Where that option is unavailable, use Deactivate Google Pay. This removes linked payment methods and the profile’s Wallet history, but it does not erase the card at your bank.
Google Account activity can also be filtered for Google Pay under Data & privacy > My Activity. Deleting an activity entry clears that displayed record, not a purchase receipt that Google may still be required to retain. A Woolworths or Coles purchase can also exist in the retailer’s system, while cards used through Google Play or YouTube may need separate removal.
Remove account links and device traces
For a complete local cleanup, open Settings > Accounts, select the relevant Google account, and choose Remove account. Then clear Google Pay or Wallet storage again. Removing the account revokes access from Google apps on that handset; it does not cancel subscriptions or delete cloud data held in the account.
When recycling or selling a phone, use Find Hub or Google’s device-finding service to confirm the handset is online, then perform Erase all data and reset under Settings > System > Reset options. Samsung models often place this under General management or System. Back up your photos and authenticator accounts before wiping the device.
If the phone is missing, lock or erase it remotely, contact Telstra, Optus or Vodafone Australia to suspend the mobile service, and ask your bank to flag or replace the card. Do this quickly because a local reset cannot protect a device that remains connected with an active session.
Handle common cleanup situations safely
Different situations need slightly different sequences. Use the first checklist for routine jobs:
- Moving to a new phone: remove the card from Wallet, sign out on the old handset, then sign in on the replacement.
- App problems: clear storage, update Android and the app, then re-add the card after confirming its details.
- Selling a device: remove the Google account, clear remaining app data, factory reset and confirm the reset screen appears.
- Lost handset: remotely lock or erase it, contact the mobile provider, and have the bank replace the card.
Before deleting anything, make a short record of what must remain accessible:
- Check Wallet payment methods and decide which cards to remove or retain.
- Review Google Account Security > Devices and sign out the old handset.
- Check Google Play and YouTube payment methods for cards used outside Wallet.
- Save receipts for purchases, warranties and tax records you need.
Australian Privacy Principles and guidance from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner can help when an Australian organisation holds the record. Google, your bank and the retailer may each hold separate copies, so request deletion from every relevant holder and keep confirmation of completed actions.
